Good semi-auto shotgun for plinking and sd

Hi, its me again with a new question. I am intersted in buying am semi auto 12 gauge shotgun for plinking an sd. But I am a shotgun newbie and I would be be pleased hearing some suggestions.

ps: I am from austria and pump action shotguns are prohibited since 1996, so I am forced to buy am semi auto modell.

I don't know if these are available in Europe, but the Mossberg 930 series is extremely easy to use, clean, and they don't hurt the wallet too bad, either...

This combo is available here in the States for under $500 USD....

I have done some investigations and the mossberg would be available at a very good price. Another interssing model would be the remington 1100 or the benelli m1. What do you think about these two modells

In the U.S. the Benelli would cost significantly more. I don't know if that would hold true in Austria. I have a Benelli M1 and like it very much.

I too, am a Mossberg man!!!
As for loads... Any buckshot over a #4 buck is going to be had to absorb without losing all the blood needed to think! if you seriously mean defense and against a 2 legger than we are talking close range so the slug is not so needed...

Chipperman Yes, that's very strange, but I don't know the Details, why an pump action ist considired as Kriegsmaterial (in englisch ware material). Here in austria the benelli is also more expensive than the mossberg.

ps: concerning ammo, which load will feed well in an auto shotgun?

we have a couple guys that speak the proper load mumbo jumbo well I think they say Feet per second of 1,200 or 1,250 should feed in a properly functioning auto loader... But hopefully they will chime in on this for you.

IMHO, since Austria and Italy are within the EU, the Benelli is your best bet.

M1, M2, & M3 are inertia (recoil) operated. The new M4 is gas operated. I prefer the Benelli recoil system over the Remington gas system. I think the mossberg is also gas. Recoil system is, IMO, more reliable, more durable, and it is certainly easier to clean. If you can't have a pump, then a Benelli M1 or M2 would be a good choice.

Assuming there's no translation misunderstandings, does anyone else find it bizarre that Austria prohibits pump shotguns and allows auto-loaders?

Because of where you live, you may have the opportunity to possess the finest SD scattergun ever made in my opinion. Look around for a HK/Benneli 121 series M1 A or B. These are wood stocked, 20" perfectly made semi-auto guns. They are virtually UNKNOWN in this country but are the guns that established the M-1 S90 rep in America.

As a second choice the Franchi I-12 Inertia police model should be available in your part of Europe.

Since when does ANY gun ban make sense? This makes as much sense to me as any other restriction, makes no sense at all. Bans are not based on logic.

If you are leaning in the direction of a Mossberg 930, you might take a look at the SPX model. It has an extended magazine allowing 7 cartridges plus 1 in the chamber for a total of 8 (if you use 2 3/4"). It also comes with great sights. The rear sight is mounted on a Picatinny rail for full up/down and left/right adjustment.

It's a fun shotgun to shoot too! :-)

@Scattergun Bob unfortunately I wasn't able to find the 121 series but the Franchi I-12 would be available at a good price. I was also able to find an benelli m2. The m2 would be a a little cheaper than the m1. I will check if i can get mossberg 930 spx first and than I will decide.

Interesting that pumps are outlawed but semis are not, here in the states it would be the other way around, or soon will be with the current political climate. (those evil autoloaders and all)

I am not sure if they make a shorter barrel than the waterfowl barrels, but if they do, you could check out the Winchester Super X3, or browning golds/silvers. They are basically the same internal working parts. I find the recoil of the Winchester I just bought to be greatly lessened over fixed breach or even a Benelli Super Black Eagle I once had. You can fire off three shots very quickly and still remain on target. For self defense, if you can get one with a shorter barrel

I would look at it.

For sd ammo, I would stick with 00 buckshot.

RJM The Winchester X3 or the browning shotguns would also be avialable here in austria, but they are not cheap. I have to chance to test them on the range this weekend. After the test firings I will decide.
