USPSA ?'s

I'm planning to get started in USPSA competitions. Came to shooting late @ 45 y.o., not planning to be a champion, but want to do the best I can and improve my skills. So, a couple of questions...

1. What are the most prevalent guns used in each class except for open? Can't get a race gun at this time.

2. In production class, does a Glock 35(don't have), have a big advantage over a Glock 22(do have)?

3. If I want to shoot 9mm, is there a big advantage difference between a Glock 17 and Glock 34?

1. Limited: A "widebody" .40. The STI Edge is a good example.
Limited-10: An Edge loaded with 10 rounds; a 1911 with 10 round extension magazine.
Single Stack: A 1911, period.
Production: Glock, CZ.
Revolver: S&W 625.

Yes, there are others, there are some G35s in Limited, for example.

2. G35 has an advantage in sight radius and it comes with the 3.5 lb connector and tall magazine catch you would probably want to add to a G22.
3. G34 vs G17 likewise.
But there are some people who prefer the standard length guns. Friend of mine looked hard at a G34 but shoots a G17 because he likes the "feel."

If you handload, .40 Minor is very soft to shoot in Production and you can soup it up to Major for Limited. Some care is required loading .40 for a Glock, but you can do ok as long as you avoid the fast powder - heavy bullet loads some people think have the least recoil (but do have the highest pressure.)

Limited: STI and Caspian and Glock and ParaOrdnance
Limited 10: 1911 and Glock
Production: Beretta and Ruger and Desert Eagle and Glock and Steyr and H&K and CZ and ParaOrdnance
Revolver: S&W 625 and Ruger GP100, and Redhawk (me, when my wing works)

At other clubs I travel to STI rules Limited, 1911s rule L10, and S&W M&Ps are actually catching up with the Glocks in Production!

I started shooting a Glock 35 in Limited, and still occasionally do. No offense intended, but I would advise you not to get an STI widebody yet because you're probably not good enough for it to really give you an advantage.

If you already have a Glock 22, by god shoot it! The more triggertime you can get in the better. I have a G35 because I bought it specifically for USPSA competition. It may require a little more practice to become proficient, but it's now been proven by Dave Sevigny that you can win it all with a Glock in Limited.

I would suggest you add the 3.5lb. trigger bar, extended mag release, and possibly extended slide release, but that's really up to your preference. 1911s will always be the most popular competition, and I'd venture to say that Glocks will always be right behind them.

45 years old! I started at 58. I shoot in the Production division using a 9mm XD9 Tactical. Most are shooting a Glock model along with a couple M&P's. One thing I noticed immediately, you CANNOT keep up with the speed and/or accuracy of the young guns. So, all I could pass along is enjoy the sport and compete within your range, not others.
