Read carefully.....

I got into a fracas with Triple 7 and .45LC and .44 Mag.

You can read the results in a thread entitled "I think I made a mistake"

According to Hodgdon and backed up by some additional info, Triple 7 FFFg is too hot for confidently safe shooting in .45 LC and in .44 Magnum. In fact they say, don't shoot it in any cartridges at full load.

You have to read Hodgdon's literature pretty carefully and thoroughly to come up with that conclusion. It is as much what they DON'T say in their blurb as what the DO say.

So here are three pieces of info:

1. Hodgdon says (in a verbal conversation with one of their tech reps) absolutely do not shoot Triple 7 FFFG full loads in cartridges. Could cause failure of the cylinder

2. Some casual conversations with experienced shooters backs that up.

3. For a given revolver model, the larger the caliber, the thinner the cylinder wall and barrel and hence the less mass to absorb energy. (So I think and will adopt this policy that .357, .38LC and .38SC would be okay when fully loaded with 777 FFFg in a good condition new revolver. If I kill myself, I'll let y'all know.)

I misloaded about 400 rounds in .44 Magnum and .45LC (plus some .45-70 Govt that I am less concerned about) and I am in the process of downloading them.

Detractors will tell us that BP develops pressure in a way that puts less stress on the weapon, or that it develops less pressure than smokeless. I know that I have chronied some full Triple Seven FFFg loads in .45 LC (Before I realized it was dangerous) and they were SCREAMING. (Close to a thousand fps) And the pistol gets mighty hot, mighty quick. And the recoil is excessive.

I think I would prolly be safe shooting these loads and I am by nature a fool hearty person. But in this case I am not taking any chances.

For those who think it is alright, I would never try to dispute you or convince you otherwise.
