I'm not familiar with the take down of the M&P series gun but it sounds like something similar happened to me. I had to jiggle the slide and put a pit of muscle into it but I eventually got the take down lever out. My gun didn't have any functional issues afterwards but I still checked all points of contact just to make sure.
