Short barreled derringers?
How effective were the short barreled black powder derringers, like the Philadelphia derringers? I read that the reason why black powder revolvers usually has a longer barrel than modern smokeless revolvers is because the black powder burn much slower and therefore need a longer barrel.
The shortest Philadelphia derringers had only a 1.5" barrel, how ineffective where they compared to a smokeless version? And does the barrel include or exclude the chamber?
