I know that I read an article a number of years ago in which it was said that the colt 1860 Army revolver was given award for its design even though the pistol design was a hundred and some years old. It was not an award as a weapon but as a design incorporating function and beauty.

I would be willing to bet that many buyers of these revolves never shoot them or don't shoot them that much. They buy them because they are a work of art, consideing as you say the era in which they were created.
