Definite chore, to be avoided whenever reasonable and possible.
If I could NEVER do it, I wouldn't. As it is now, they usually get a quick wipe-down with oil and the innards get cleaned if/when accuracy degrades.
The exception is my carry gun, which gets a field strip and cleaning any time it's fired, mainly for inspection purposes.
