Have you considered the Mosin-Nagant? I'm pretty sure I saw someone from Australia responding to some of the Mosin threads.

Is the 7.62x54R ammo available easily in Australia?

Mosin's are pretty cheap over here ($59 USD and up), and the surplus ammo is still kinda cheap too (around 20 cents per round or .20 USD at the cheapest).
