Don't you just love conflicting answers....
Per the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, serial numbers for the 36 ran from 295000 in 1962 to 786544 in 1969.
The flat thumbpiece ended in 66 and the diamond shape around the screwhole on the grips ended in 68.
