The non-drop-free/non-full-metal-lined mags have a round notch at the back instead of a squared notch, and the oldest ones didn't have a floorplate retainer. The floorplates were held in place by the lugs on the sides of the magazine and the notches in the floorplate.
They are just as reliable as the new mags, in my experience, as long as they are in good condition. The only real difference is that they will tend to stick in the gun unless they're empty. That is, they don't eject cleanly if they still contain a significant number of rounds.
