I don't think the sling has anything to do with the pouch. If you have the right pouch,it has vertical web straps on the back.

You take the stock off the rifle, magazines out of the pouch. Thread the forend of the shock through the straps. It slides over the pistol grip, and should be tight to the forward part of the comb.Note some M-1 carbine stocks are bulkier than others.

If I was carrying an M-1 carbine,in my hands, I'd prefer an ammo pouch on a pistol belt with suspenders. I don't like adding weight or bulk to something that I carry in my hands. And,I'd prefer to carry a lot more than 45 rounds.Think Lt Hanley on "Combat"

But the carbine was also intended as a grab and go gun for non combatants. In that role, grabbing the rifle with a mag in the well gets you 45 rounds with the pouch. If the M.A.S.H unit was being attacked,,think Hot Lips Hoolihan or Radar or Klinger grabbing a carbine. The pouch kits it out a bit.
