Given the above info, we can narrow it down to one of 2 models, either a model 14 which was the 38 target masterpiece, or the model 15, which was the 38 combat masterpiece. The SN of K98XXX automatically makes it a K frame, 6 shot revolver, 5 screw (since K98XXX is approx 1950 or so production) with adj sights.

Well given it has adjustable sights, K prefix SN on butt, I'd be very surprised if it was not a S&W.
