No, they're not that hard to install. You'll need a drill press, preferably one with laser guides and vise. The tricky part is perfectly centering and drilling the holes that mount the rail, otherwise it'll look like something out of someones garage/shed. It is attached with screws and epoxy (optional). It is VERY easy to bubba it up if you don't have the right equipment 'cause you only get one shot! Not a big deal with a RIA, but if you're talking about a $2,000 gun...
I didn't have the nerve to do it myself so I had a 'smith do it. If I had to do it again, I would have just bought another pistol!
