Since you already entioned hi-point, if a long gun is a possilbe option I'd recommend looking at a hi-point carbine in either 9mm or .40. They're inexpensive, good, fun shooters, and an all-around nice weapon if you don't mind them being ugly. I picked one of the 9mm models up shortly after they first came out and have really enjoyed it.
