Checkering is most certainly not necessary, especially on grips that are going to be used more as display and not combat scenarios. 80% of your grips is focused on the front and back straps of the gun. Checkering is more important in those two areas than it is on the sides of the gun. I shoot smooth grips on all of my guns.
