I’m thinking it would be hard to go wrong with a Ruger Hawkeye or Win 70 in 6.5x55, 7mm-08, 308 or 270 win.
A nice 3-9x40 scope would round this out nicely. Maybe a Vortex Diamondback HP in 3-12x42?
I would consider adding the Browning BAR or lever action to that list if shots will be under 400 yards.
