The idea is to create the illusion of a lighter trigger, by spreading the pressure out over a wider area of the finger. Think of them as a "poor-boys target trigger." The good thing about them is all you have to do to undo them is take the shoe off. You could buy hammer extensions that fit with set screws also.
They were really intended for S/A bullseye type shooting, but a lot of shooters used them back in the day. They started to fall out of favor when holsters started to cover the trigger/guard area if I remember correctly, which was about the time "action" shooting sports started to gain ground.
