Thus far, I've carried:

S&W SW40F Sigma (urrrrp!)
Ruger P90 (good gun, but a bit big)
HK USP 40 (again, a good gun, very accurate)
G22 (my second go-to gun)

and what I carry now:

Colt 1911 Enhanced, on and off duty.

I don't feel hampered at all by magazine capacity--I carry 5 reloads (40 rounds) plus the full mag in the sidearm +1--makes 49 rounds.

I have practiced my reloads; they're smooth and consistent.
The gun itself is extremely accurate, as well as being totally reliable.
