Well, the proper name is .45 S&W...but that is neither here nor there. You have often seen the .45 Colt called the "Long Colt", which is not a proper name either. (We generally cause more confusion than necessary!)

The .45 Colt was nick-named the ".45 Long" and the .45 S&W was nick-named the ".45 Short" by the good old boys in blue, the US Horse Soldier.

The Smith version is of the same dimensions as the Colt version, except (guess what?) in length...

You can form .45 S&W from .45 Colt brass...
