Late 70's,maybe 80,I bought an 03A3 Remington action only.Mine was the double nheat treat,case hardened nickel steel.

As I recall,that was a choice reciever,Machining was a bit rough,but it was slick.

I agree,the drill rifle route is not so good.

Mine ended up a 35 Whelen Sporter.Back then,not a bad idea.Today,not so much.
