I will admit to not having researched this issue, but I'm not convinced that the above statement is true. I've also never heard of an arrestee being denied a phone call just because it was to someone other than a lawyer. When I was in private practice, my business cards had a series of statements on the back for my clients to give to the police. One of those statements was, "I want to call a lawyer and call a member of my family."
