If you don't care that much about wind drift, you _can_ stabilize heavier bullets in a longer twist, by using the shorter RN ones.

Twist and stabilization depends in part on the relative length of the bullet--which tends to follow weight.

I vote for some Chrono work using 7.62x39 in a .308 bore barrel and 220-gr RN flat-base bullets. Some .311 barrels will do okay with .308 jacketed, or so I've heard....
