A 16" carbine will be at it's max at 300 yards. The shorter barrel limits velocity which limits range and killing effect of the bullets. I'll carry a 16" Hbar carbine from now until April almost all the time I'm outside. Coyotes are my target at this time of year. The 16" is handy to carry across the chest while doing chores or riding an ATV.
If I'm calling an area that has shots expected to be 250+ yards, I'll either switch to a bolt 22/250 or at least a 20" barrel AR.
I agree that you've waited too long to get on the AR train at a decent price. Even I'm looking at selling some AR's to take advantage of the high prices.
