It's not that the 30-06 is a bad round, it's just been superceded by more modern rounds. At 1K yds. its predecessors were the 1873 trapdoor in 45-70 and the Krag-Jorgensen in 30-40. They, too, have fallen by the wayside in the popularity contest.
If I had only one rifle, it would be the venerable '06. You can load it down to a passable varmint rifle or pump it up enough to kill elephants.
