Snakeshot in a .22lr is a 10-foot range proposition. I'd stick with a .22 LR semi-auto using solids. Check out the Marlin SS semi-autos. They may be cheaper than the 10-22 and most have a tubular magazine that holds about 15 shots.

For a handgun, it's hard to beat the Ruger single-six convertible with both LR and .22 Mag cylinders. A bit pricey, but a great carrying pistol.
