I have one in SS.
The barrel-bushing fit on mine was really sloppy, more so than GI spec.
I'd start there.
On mine I replaced the bushing with a EGW oversized that I hand-fitted, now there's no play at all and it shoots really, really well.
I also did a trigger job, replaced the main spring, the hammer, and converted it back into a series 70.
