Blackk Powder elk hunt

It is no fun to have something good happen without a little braggin. So here goes.

My son got a nice big 6 X 6 elk with a .54 Hawkin by Cabelas. He was using a 425 gr. Great Plains over 90 grains of Triple Seven and a #11 magnum cap.
The elk was lying down chewing his cud watching us. My son shot from around 80-100 yards away off-hand and nailed the elk in the ribs. The big bull never got to his feet. The test for CWD (wasting disease) came back as "None Detected." The antlers are nice but nothing spectacular, around 38 inches from the skull cap to the tips and 36 inches width from tip to tip. All the same, it was a darned good take.

I was watching as the bullet hit the animal, and the dust flew out of his coat. The bullet did not exit, but he was bleeding from the nose by the time we got reloaded and walked over. The lungs were full of blood.

At the range, the Great Plains was chronied at 1475 fps and was really consistent. The gun has a 1/48 twist.

Braggin over.
