The guys making the calls "at the highest levels" aren't necessarily more hip to the rules than a random SO on this forum; plenty of illegal stages and bad calls at nationals.
Either your gun is legal or it's not, and you shouldn't have to worry about the rules being enforced differently at different matches.
Contact your Area Coordinator - who may also not be hip to the rules - and have him/her get a definitive ruling from HQ.
