The ammo appears to be the standard Model 1898 ball cartridge for the Model 1898 rifle (Krag). Since Frankford had not made any new Krag ammo since at least 1909 (they had reloaded some), several contracts were let to Remington for that ammo, up to the early 1930's. In WWI, there was a contract for 25 million rounds.

Krags was used in WWI for training and guard duty, and also was issued to some rear echelon troops; some went to France in the hands of the engineers who were to prepare facilities for American troops.
