By the SN is, it has M629-1. What does the M mean? My buddy has a 629-4 and it doesn't have the M.
As a prefix it means Model. Sometimes they use "MOD" sometimes just "M" and other times no prefix at all.
An exception would be the 581, 681, 586 and 686 no dash and -1 L frames. The ones that had the firing pin bushing recall completed were also stamped with a "M" (for modified) above or after the model number.
