Your friends attackers read them for what they were, and took advantage.
When considering if your choice of firearm is adequate, you have to ask yourself at least two questions:
1. Are you likely to regularly carry a bigger gun?
2. Are you likely to be confronted by multiple assailants?
Being the type of person who is concerned about personal defense, I will assume that you have a level or personal awareness which might keep you from looking like a sheep. Avoidance, and not looking like a victim might prevent you from being confronted to begin with.
Also, street criminals do not commonly expect to meet resistance. I wager that many on this forum were correct in saying that once shots are fired the criminals will scatter, giving you an opportunity to un-ass the area.
