The Canik sounds like a winner.

You can also get really good deals on a CZ P-09 -- it's a pretty enormous 9mm pistol and a real tack driver. I own and carry the P-07 (Glock 19 size), while the P-09 is a bit larger than a Glock 17 and has a higher capacity.

The single action trigger is very crisp, the double action is pretty good, and you can configure it either as DA/SA with decocker or as SA with safety.

You can put a set of Dawson Precision fiberoptic target sights on it for like $70.

Another option that can often be had at good prices is the Springfield XD Mod.2 "Tactical." It's just an XD with a 5" barrel, but a great shooter and comes with good sights.
