If you contact Mossberg, they will tell you that the heavy barrel is designed for extended shooting and heavy use, and the extra steel helps keep the barrel cooler than the thinner steel.
Not to protect the barrel should it get clogged with mud, dirt, snow or bits of zombie flesh... or that it will better tolerate being used as a bludgeon.
That's what Mossberg will tell you...
