He used a .45 cal round in a .44 cal pistol.
If the bullet cannot get out the pressure has to go somewhere.
Also if they were hard lead they might not have made it through the forcing cone in a pistol that was designed for soft lead.
Naturally, I can't say for sure but that is IMHO.
