Are there 22 pistol competitions? Anything else seems like a lot of $ to practice with.

Bullseye, Rimfire steel, silhouette. Rimfire steel, in particular, is a very affordable way of getting into competitive shooting. You just need a gun, a few extra mags, and a box of ammo. Check out some "Ruger rimfire" vids on YouTube.
As far as $ to practice with, you can reduce this somewhat by...
...making your live fire sessions as effective as possible by 1)having a plan when you go to the practice range (mindlessly sending rounds downrange is a great way to spend $$), and 2) dry fire regularly. It's
free for petessake.
...choosing a lesser-expensive caliber, e.g. 9mm instead of .45acp
...finding good on-line ammo deals
...get into reloading your own ammo
...choosing a gun that has a .22 conversion kit available for it so you can supplement, rather than replace, your cf training
