If its a refurbished AK, chances are, instead of parking or bluing, the gun was painted with black stove paint. As that paint gets hot, it "cures" and in the process gives off some smoke and smells awful.

After building mine, I had the same issue for the first few range trips.
Just give her a good cleaning, and keep shooting!
