I disagree. The $600 rifles are more than serviceable for the vast majority of shooters. What separates a $1,200 rifle from a $600 rifle usually comes down to the barrel, a free float handguard, furniture, mid-length gas (on a 16" barrel), and possibly (but not always) an upgraded trigger.
While all of those are great features, none of them are at all necessary.
