In Colorado there are quite a few walk-in areas that the State rents for hunting, They are usually accessible from Sept. to March. Google DOW walk-in program for a list.
Once I've found a likely spot on I use Google Earth to scout the area from the kitchen table before driving out. I usually scout for drainages on the satallite map and setup within 1/2 mile of water for the first stand of the day.
