I understand the not wanting to join. My lottery number for the year that mattered was mighty low. Felt certain I was going to be drafted, so I joined, so I could make a few choices about how my service time was going to be spent.
But as you say, it was one of the best things that could have happened to me. I'm in no way a perfect person, but I'm a much better person than I would have been, had I not been in.
