I did just fine with a Weaver K4 on various deer rifles. As my billfold got fatter I moved up to 3x9s, but that was more for convenience than necessity. Most of the deer I killed were with the scope set on 3X or 4X.

9X is nice for precision when sighting in, or shooting prairie dogs. Otherwise, for a deer hunter, it's mostly window-dressing.
