A sawed-off shotgun still requires aiming; the pattern is nowhere near as wide as people seem to think.
I shot my buddy's 6.5" barrel 12 ga. Serbu Super-Shorty (the Mossberg 500 version) and I still had to aim it. We were shooting 00 Buck at about 5 yards and the pattern was only several inches wide.
As to the OP's question, I'd go with the XD-9. It's easier to shoot well than the SD40 VE (or the SD9 VE) and it's more portable than a shotgun, even a short-barreled one.
