All you did was to drop the firing pin into the position it would be in if the bolt were in the gun and the trigger pulled. As you found, all you have to do is "cock" the striker by hand.

However, there is supposed to be a little notch at the edge of the cocking cam that the sear nose rests in when the bolt is cocked out of the gun. That notch may be worn down and letting the firing pin drop too easily. Maybe it would be a good idea to run it by a gunsmith if it bother you.
