Parts and mag availability was my concern at the time (and just a desire to have a quality 7.62x39mm AK). The Polish Beryl is a reliable 5.56x45mm AK, so certainly the Russians could do the same.
Also, doing a Beryl-ish clone build of a 5.56x45mm Saiga would have been a lot of fun.
