To clarify, I've never owned a handgun, but the choices are down to spotting a Makarov or P-64 at one of our gun shows.

Some on-line photos often seem to depict grips for right-handed shooters.
If there is a term for a grip suitable for both right and left-handed people, I'm totally unfamiliar.
Are you talking a "target" type grip with a thumbrest of sorts on one side?

Any of the military surplus grips will be symmetrical, the way you want. My preferred Mak grip is the East German black plastic grip.
