I'm not saying there are not any better choices, but you can't go wrong with the Smith and Wesson SD9VE/SD40VE.
I have the SD9VE (9x19mm version) and I haven't had one issue with it even with cheap ammo.

Accuracy isn't amazing out of the 4-inch barrel and the trigger is heavy to some at around 8 or 9 lbs. but I think for the price, $340-380 (in my area) is a bargain.
