trying to decide now between the Ruger 22/45 and the S&W 22a
My kids hated the .22a ..... spit unburned powder out of the breech at the them......

I have the a stainless heavy barreled 22/45 (Mark III)...... the only things I don't like about it are the magazine disconnect, which makes re-assembly a PITA, and the dirt collecting loaded chamber indicator...... on the bright side, once you have re-assembly down pat, you can amaze the uninitiated! The .22/45 makes for great trainer for a 1911!

A 22lr ......... for target shooting and a .357 Mag. revolver for carry and home defense.
If you are going to get a .357 for carry and home defense, I would recommend getting a .22 revolver in the same make and model, if possible, to better master that DA* trigger pull.

*DA means either "double action" or "durned awful" depending upon whether you learned to shoot with a single action or somthing crappier.
