FiveSeven - the only one of its kind?

The FiveSeven is around for quite a while now, and with it the 5,7mm round. Although the gun has been highly praised and it seems that it would be an option not only for the military due to its low recoil, long range and high mag cap, nothing new of the same line came out after. No clones, no comparable new developments of other making (apart from maybe the Kel-Tec PMR 30, which is of the rimfire realm, though)...
So what do you think, is there going to be some innovation as far as handguns in "Personal Defence Weapon calibers" is concerned or are 9mm / .40 / .45 going to remain the standard in the foreseeable future, with 5,7 or thelike being just the niche products they are today?
