I am looking into a Ruger American for around that

I think the competition has driven the price for real shooters way down. With modern manufacturing, it's not as expensive to make a great rifle. So for me the used market is a little less enticing than it would be given my cheap nature. It's almost like electronics. That 512 MB iPod at $50 just isn't a great bargain.

Not saying I'd turn my nose up at a pre-64 Winchester 70
