You need to slug that barrel to find out which one to use. If it was US manufactured after WW2 it would be .224, pre war would be .223, foreign manufacture might be either one. Looking at the age of the rifle it's probably .223, and .223 would be the safe choice.

I highly recommend you don't do anything with that rifle till you find out for sure!
