I might be slow but what "number" are you asking about?
The "B" or the numbers on the crane that you say is the serial and model numbers?
Long ago S&W put a B in the shroud to show the gun was blue but that stopped years ago and would not be on a stainless gun like a M629. Maybe yours is an inspector mark? I don't know.
S&W did put serial numbers on the crane of some guns but many times we see assembly numbers as he ^^^ said.
Your 629s must be early ones because only those were pinned and recessed and are worth a premium to some of us.
